PUTRAJAYA, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories contingent’s decision to set up training base for Sukma weightlifters in Jasin, Melaka, the very same place where Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines had trained before going on to win a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, paid off handsomely as Abdila Iyad Abdul Jalil swept the men’s 96kg category gold medal here today.

The 19-year-old lifted 285kg in the snatch, clean and jerk to claim the gold in the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) weightlifting competition held at the Presint 11 Community Complex, here today.

The Kuala Lumpur-born weightlifter said he was satisfied with his performance today because he was able to beat his personal best record without using any performance enhancing products.

“The training regime in Jasin was tough and challenging as the conditions were hot and humid. However, the training routine came in handy today to win the gold. I also used the tips recomended by Erry Hidayat because he is my closest idol in weightlifting as we are in the same team,” he told reporters here after the competition.

The silver medal went to Sarawak’s Mohamad Hussein Omar Mayah who managed 255kg while Muhammad Nur Syahmi Mohd Nazri from Perak took the bronze with total clearence of 250kg.

In the women’s 81kg category, Terengganu’s 22-year-old Nur Shafika Samsuddin cleared an overall weight of 184kg in the snatch, clean and jerk to take the gold ahead of Johor’s Mimi Syazwani Zainal Abidin (176kg) and Kelantan’s Nur Nabila Najwa Halim (171kg) who finished with the silver and bronze respectively.
